Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

I would say that this verse is my life verse (including verse 17). So much is packed into this verse that impacts what we do in corporate worship. It also addresses the question of why we do what we do in corporate worship. Whether it be the form of worship, the purpose, mode, the inspiration, the attitude. It's all inside this verse. I heard Bob Kauflin say at a conference that when he walks through an airport he passes a Cinnabon store, desiring that one of those cinnamon rolls would dwell richly in is stomach. It was a funny way (but actually kind of accurate) to compare how we should let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly. And one of the main ways we do that is through a God-centered worship service, and music is often a major apart of that experience.

The articles posted here in this blog come out

of my life-long study about the subject I hold most dear, the worship of God. Over the years, either through intentional research or unplanned confrontation various subjects have come up during the daily workings of ministry and service. Often times these subjects come back in different forms or contexts. I find myself rifling through my piles of articles when one of these subjects comes up again, so I figure why not organize them in such a way that others might benefit, especially those who serve in similar capacity to myself. And also, selfishly speaking, I can find something when I need it.

Therefore, this blog is to be

a resource for fellow worshipers of God in Christ.It is to help inform those regarding the matters of worshiping God within the context of the local church.It is intended to be a place where areas of disagreement over non-essential aspects within Christian orthodoxy surrounding public worship can be discussed, researched, and considered.All the articles I have linked

occur in the common practice of everyday corporate life within the church body especially for those called to positions of pastoral leadership including music directors, worship pastors, or worship leaders.

I am one of two worship pastors at South Church in Lansing, MI. I started here at the beginning of 2011. I have been a worship pastor/worship leader since 2002 and been in music ministry (in one form or another) since 1991. I

grew up in Woodstock, Illinois, a smaller town near Chicago. I studied composition, voice, and conducting at Eastern Illinois University and the University of Southern California Thornton

School of Music. I received my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Composition at those schools respectively. In 2009 I received my Certificate of Christian Ministry from the Evangelical Free Church of America.

In my early years of

ministry I co-founded Stretch, a men’s a capella group, that toured the Midwest and East Coast in the early to mid 1990s. Since then I have served in the local church as worship leader or worship pastor in Pasadena, CA, Cleveland, OH, and now Lansing, MI. I have led worship in blended, contemporary and traditional settings. I've written a variety of compositions from children's music to sacred arrangements, to choir and orchestral scores, and I've conducted many sacred and classical pieces.
